Observed among the Bafia peoples of Cameroon shortly after the end of the First World War, young males assumed to be immature for relationships with their female peers courted other male peers. Throughout puberty and up until the age of eighteen or twenty years, when a male wanted to become intimate with another male peer, he approached a perspective partner indirectly via the customary enquiry of flowers. From here, plates of fruit and earthnuts were given. An acceptance of the gifts meant acceptance to courtship and inevitable intimacies between both males. Courtship followed a similar pattern among other tribes, but the gift and its acceptance was more symbolic. Among the Baja and Pangwe tribe in Central Africa, an interested male would gather any sort of debris, dry stalks and other from the village square, put them in leaf wrappings and give them to the young male he was interested in with the words: Here is the food I cooked for you! If the other male consents to the ritualistic offering of courtship, he takes the bundle, unwraps it, and pretends to eat. If the male does not consent to the offering, he simply throws the bundle away leaving the one interested in him dejected. When gay relationships between males lasted beyond a certain time, intimacies between the males where assumed to create a kind of wealth medicine which was believed to bring good health to the partners.
Homosexuality is found in over 450 species. Homophobia is found in only one. Which one seems unnatural now?
